Up-date on the LLB Curriculum Project
15 May 2010
Two electronic surveys, one for university law lecturers and one for legal practitioners (advocates, attorneys, judicial officers, prosecutors, legal advisers in the public and private sectors) were distributed in March 2010. We were able to obtain e-mail addresses for over 800 law faculty members, and for nearly 15,000 legal practitioners. Over 42% of university law lecturers responded, and more than 17% of the legal practitioners. All in all, this gives us the views and opinions of over 3,000 people, which is a rich source of information and ideas.
Research staff are now doing a review of the LLB curricula at the 17 South African universities offering the 4-year LLB, to identify similarities and differences in the requirements for the degree.
We have invited more than 30 legal organisations to make submissions to the project. Submissions have already been received from the following groups, and can be viewed by clicking on the links below:
The report is expected to be completed near the end of July 2010. Preparations are underway to host a Colloquium, likely in September this year, to present the findings to the legal community and to the public.
